Goku ran across the palace courtyards, looking around for Nataku. They were supposed to play today, and he wasn't here. Did he go off to battle again? Was he going to come back as injured as he had been? It was really worrying, especially since no one else seemed to care. It pissed him off. Why couldn't they see that Nataku was doing his best? That he needed to rest and that he didn't need people to look at him with such disdain.

He touched the corner of his eyes. Nataku told him that it's because they were heretics. That they were unique and that's why people didn't like them so much. But was that really the entire reason? A judgement based on someone's eye color? He looked down at the shackles that bound his wrists. They were heavy, they were cold, and they hurt his wrists. He would like them off, and he didn't understand why they had to stay on.

"Whose there?"

Goku blinked and looked over to see a young woman dressed in a multilayered kimono sitting on the ground. With her was a younger girl, probably around the same age as him. Her eyes weren't gold though, but she was watching him curiously.

"Uh..." Goku looked around wondering if maybe she was talking to someone else. "Me?"

"You have something dangling on you." The woman continued. Goku watched as she used her staff to help her stand up and then she tapped it on the ground, walking over towards him.

The young girl smiled brightly as she took the woman's hand probably being her extra eyes. "Are you a prisoner?" The girl asked excitedly.

"I...don't think that I am." Goku blinked slowly. "But who are you? I'm Goku. Konzen gave me the name!"

"Konzen? Ah..." The woman gave a smile. "I'm Riko. This is my friend, Kaede."

"It's nice to meet you. Are you going to go play with Nataku again?" Kaede asked, her eyes wide and bright.

"I am. Do you want to play? Can she play?" Goku looked up at the woman. "Or..um..." He frowned. "Do you need someone to be your eyes?"

"Be my....oh no." Riko laughed shaking her head from side to side. "I'll be fine on my own. If you want to play you're more than welcomed to. I can trust Konzen's judgement."

"Eh? You know Konzen?"

"Only by name." Riko chuckled. "I never met him. He's in the palace too much, so we'd never cross paths. Nataku should be looking for you right now actually. Why don't you head over there?" She pointed to a direction.

"Nataku wanted to pick berries that's right! He's probably over there. Come on Kaede, let's go. It's nice meeting you Riko-chan!" Goku grabbed Kaede's hand and tugged her along.

Riko listened to them leave and shook her head fondly. Children. They were innocent and crazy. Picking berries. That was a nice idea. She hummed softly as she walked away.

~

Nataku had a small basket and was leaning against the tree he had claimed with Goku as their special spot, the berries nearby. He wouldn't start without him. He had been staring at the leaves for a while and just when he closed his eyes he heard shouting. Jerking forward, eyes snapping open, he looked towards the sound and saw Goku waving his arm in the air, grinning like he usually did. There was someone behind him, though, and he tensed as he got to his feet. He felt a bit betrayed, defensive. Why would Goku bring someone else? This was their time, their spot.

He didn't wave back, only frowned, as the two reached him. The black haired girl looked to be about their age, bent over her hands on her knees and breathing rapidly. His dark violet eyes darted to Goku's bright and happy golden ones. "Who is she?" he asked, voice clipped, hurt.

"This is Kaede." Goku introduced. "I was walking over here when I met a Blind Princess named Riko. I thought that Kaede wanted to have some fun with us since she looked bored. Riko-chan said that it was alright that we let her join even though that leaves her without eyes. Was that...a bad idea?" Goku felt a little hurt himself and confused. He had hoped that Nataku would like Kaede and that they'd all be friends. There wasn't a lot of people that would play with them because of what they were. Heretics.

"I can go if I'm intruding!" Kaede said quickly, straightening up now she had caught her breath, "I always wanted to meet you, though! When Goku offered to play I got so excited, I didn't think that he should ask you, first! I'm so sorry!"

Nataku was shocked by her outburst. Her pretty blue eyes were honest and sincere, like Goku's. Seeing the hurt in Goku's eyes had made his heart twist and he had been about to agree just to make the hurt go away, when she spoke up. It sort of struck him dumb, so he reiterated so he would be sure he heard her right. "You.../wanted/ to...meet me? You aren't afraid of Goku? Or me?"

"I heard about Goku. He's been in a lot of gossip. I know you fight." Kaede looked him straight in the eye as she spoke, not backing down or showing any fear. "I didn't know this was just supposed to be between you and Goku, though. I can go." She repeated.

"No." Nataku shook his head, stomach doing that fluttering feeling he remembered when Goku said he wanted to be friends. Another friend... "We usually have to play in secret...my father...doesn't like Goku. Don't say anything okay? Let him come get you. We have to meet separately."

Kaede brightened, "Okay! I promise!"

Goku looked relieved now that he knew Nataku was okay with this. "Thank you Nataku. We'll be great friends." He grinned. "You were telling me that you knew a place that had really delicious berries." He reminded his friend. "Are they really that good? What will we do with the berries that we pick? I know some people can turn it into jam and stuff."

Nataku reached down and picked up the basket he had brought, "Yeah, the berries are nearby here! Jam? That would be tasty. I'll let you know what's ripe and what's not and we can pick as many as we can fit!" He thrust it out at Goku excitedly, "I'll let you take the basket when we're done and you can bring that jam!"

"We could bring bread and have a picnic!" Kaede bounced on her feet, cheering, "That would be so fun!"

"A picnic, good idea!" Nataku beamed, no longer hurt, but happy. This was good. "You did good, Goku." He praised the saru and then motioned for them to follow him once Goku took the basket, "This way!"

~+~
Later that evening, Goku was talking animatedly to Konzen before they went to bed. He was sitting on the futon, already bathed for the night and was watching his father-figure get ready. "I met a Blind Princess today! Her name is Riko-chan and I got to play with her assistant named Kaede and introduced her to Nataku. We're going to make jam and a picnic together!"

Konzen growled a little bit, "You're talking too fast! Slow down so I can understand what you're /saying/!" He tossed is towel at Goku's head and it landed over his stupid fluffy hair, "Baka-saru..." he mumbled, sifting through the string of words Goku had thrown at him, "Jam? Picnic? You met a girl?" He didn't quite know how he felt about that. "You should be /careful/, Goku. You could get in a lot of trouble if you're caught with Nataku. The Blind Princess you met is the Goddess of Divine Hearing. Even though her assistant left she was probably fine." This Kaede must be at least the same age as Goku and Nataku. Well. If he was making more friends that would mean he didn't have to figure out how to entertain him every second of every day.

Goku perked up, "She heard of you too! I mentioned you and she said that she knew of you. She never spoke to you before though. She was really pretty. I am careful. Nataku knows how to sneak around and I know we'll be okay." He smiled brightly. "But yea! The jam's going to be made from the berries that we picked."

"A lot of Gods and Goddesses know or know of each other." Konzen explained as patiently as he could, finally settling on the bed and flopping onto his side, "Who was pretty? Riko or her assistant?" he asked, partly teasing without realizing and partly curious. He huffed at himself and closed his eyes, "I want to try that jam." He added absently.

"We'll save you some." Goku beamed and he thought about it. "Both of them were pretty. Riko looked like a princess. She had a lot of layers on. I thought it'd be hard for her to walk. I thought Kaede was a boy at first, but when she spoke I realized she was a girl. She wore the puffy pants. Nataku told me that a lot of humans down below wear them in Japan. Wherever that is. I think you'd like them." He nodded to himself. "Hmm mmm." He beamed and then he frowned, "Hey Konzen are you a god?"

"Technically, everyone you meet is a God, Goku. It's more about what rank they are at. Common peasant folk don't hold a candle to me, or even Kanzeon. Don't ask me what rank I'm at or even Riko. It doesn't matter. Also a long explanation and we're supposed to be /sleeping/, Goku."

"Oh. Okay." Goku climbed into his own bed and fell on top of it. "Good night then Konzen."

Such a mess, such a mess! Tenpou groaned as he tried to shift through the piles of books, also trying not to knock any over and make this disaster worse. It hadn't been a whole month yet, but Kenren was going to kill him. "No good, no good..." he muttered under his breath, "She's going to be here any second and I don't have a book for her! Ah, I know I should've set it aside somewhere..." He couldn't just grab one off the top and leave it at that. That would mean he didn't put any effort into it and that just wouldn't do.

It took him another minute, but just as he was pulling a book he thought might peek her interest, there was a knock on the door. He yanked the book the rest of the way instead of going slow, and if this had been a game of Jenga he would have lost horribly. He shouted as the books toppled towards him and one landed corner first on his foot. "Ah! Just a minute! Coming!" He hopped a bit since he hadn't been wearing shoes and headed for the door, pulling it open only part way, "Gomen, gomen, Mai." He greeted the lovely black haired goddess waiting patiently for him.

"Hello Tenpou." Mai said with a bright smile on her face. She was wearing a beautiful white summer dress and flats. Her hair was pulled back in a half-ponytail and she was holding a book against her chest. "I heard your books fall. Didn't you just clean your library not too long ago? Kenren's gonna get upset for all that hard work wasted." She teased him. "Here you go." She handed him the book. "I loved the characters. The Hero made me sad a little though. He worked hard."

Not a lot of people wore clothing most often seen in the world below. It was a pleasant sight always to see her so soft and welcoming. She never tried to impose her status or make people think they were less than her. "We have to clean about once a month, yeah. While he's used to it, you're right he does get exasperated every time." Tenpou rubbed his neck sheepishly, took the book she had and handed her the one he had grabbed, "If you liked that one, I hope this one holds your interest just as well. A bit more...romance, if I remember correctly, but just as much action and a bit of mystery."

"Then I'll read it!" Mai grinned as she took the one that he was handing her. "You never led me wrong yet, Tenpou. You're a better library than the one in Heaven /and/ you know how to recommend good books. I still say you'd make a better Bookkeeper than the ones in palace are." Her face turned a little cold, but the mischief was still there. "I was there earlier and they tried to tell me that I had better things to do. I thought they'd change their attitude...no such luck."

"You know you're always welcome to drop by if the palace library is too stingy for you." Tenpou grinned at her, "Since this is just my office I leave it unlocked. Not a lot of people can navigate through the mess besides Kenren, anyway. I just haven't invited you in because it really is such a disaster..." He knew she wouldn't but he didn't want her to have any bad impressions of him for being a slob.

"Don't worry about me." Mai grinned. "I know I don't look it, but I can get around things. A pile of books and papers is probably less daunting than say trying to climb a tree when Kaede's bored to tears. Riko-chan can only do so much." She shook her head from side to side. "I like the staff in your library better anyway." She winked at him. "I'll be back when I'm done reading this. If you need help cleaning that library though, don't hesitate to drag me in, too. I'd love to help since you've been so kind in letting me borrow your stuff."

Tenpou opened the door wide enough to poke his head through, "Riko and Kaede? I have a little friend that talked about them. I had forgotten that you knew them, too."

"Little friend? Goku right?" Mai blinked in surprise. "That's a coincidence. Kaede was telling me about him. She was very happy that she got to hang out with Goku's friend. Ah, I probably should leave it there. There's a certain someone that doesn't know what the word "fun" means and he's a bastard."

Tenpou's grin turned a little sly, "You mean Konzen, yeah?" He snickered, "I know Goku and Konzen. I'm just waiting for them to meet Kenren. Then everything will come full circle, wouldn't it?" He blinked and then laughed a bit, "You should suggest Riko take Kaede for a playdate to see Goku. He would like that, and Riko could meet Konzen."

"Look at you playing match maker. Okay. I'll bite." Mai grinned wickedly. "You're always full of surprises. I should go ahead and go though. I'm probably holding you up. It was wonderful talking to you again. Let's meet again sometime soon, yes?" She always said goodbye like that. Especially with him.

"Like minds, Mai." He said her name a little breathy, watching her cheeks tint just a tiny bit, "I was just about to say that. I would offer coffee, but unfortunately my mornings and afternoons are taken. Is there anywhere you've been meaning to go for dinner but haven't had the chance?"

Mai blinked in surprise and she smiled, "Now that you mention it..." She looked at him curiously. "Yeah there has. I heard that they have a good grill and that their sake's to die for. It's just down the road a bit. You know what I'm talking about?"

"Oh, yeah, Kenren and the crew like to go there after a mission. I'll gladly take you there." Tenpou nodded, pulling back with a grin, "I look forward to it. End of the week?"

"Yes!" Mai beamed happily. "I'll meet you there. End of the week. I'll remember. Okay. I have to go now. See you again!" She waved happily before she walked off humming to herself. What luck!

You seem happy.” Riko noted as she looked up at the footsteps that were approaching her. Kaede was off doing something or another, she forgot what she had been told. But Mai was walking with a bounce and she was humming.

“I am happy! I got a date!” Mai gushed. “Guess who it’s with?”

“Could it be the librarian that’s also a marshal?” Riko pretended to think about it seriously.

“You take away my fun, but yes.” She sat down next to Riko, and placed the book in her lap. “He asked me if there was a place that I never been that I’ve wanted to try and I told him where and he said he’d love to take me at the end of the week. End of the week! Riko!”

Riko laughed, enjoying Mai’s happiness. Her friend must have been so ecstatic, it was a shame she couldn’t see how brightly that she was shining. Though, she could feel it in the way she spoke and her actions as she moved next to her. “I’m so happy for you. That’s good.”

“But speaking of dating, Tenpou told me that you should take Kaede and find Goku.” Mai told her after a moment to compose herself. “A small playdate for the two of them since Nataku can’t always be there to play with them.”

“Yes. I was thinking about that.” Riko agreed. “He’s staying with Konzen so it shouldn’t be too hard to run into him.”

“From what I understand he’s loud, so you wouldn’t miss him in the large castle.” Mai concluded. “I’ll go grab Kaede and let her know that you want to go to Konzen’s castle.”

“What now?” Riko blinked.

“Yes.” Mai beamed. “Come on, Ri-chan, it’ll be fun. Tenpou suggested it so it has to be a good idea.”

“I think you’re already putting too much faith in what Tenpou thinks is a good idea.” Riko said dryly. “But fine, I’ll pretend not to know that you have a plan somewhere in there and if you go find Keade for me, I’ll leave.”

“Yes! You won’t regret it.” Mai hurriedly stood up and ran off, shouting for Kaede.

Riko blinked at her friend’s wording. Yeah there was a plan somewhere in there.

PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptyFri Apr 07, 2017 9:37 pm

Konzen was writing another paper at his desk, and it felt so /strange/. It was a quiet day, which he hadn't had since he'd met the saru currently on the floor. There was paper everywhere, all with some sort of doodle on them. After finding markers in one of his silly little hunts yesterday and drawing places he shouldn't, he had forced him to clean it all and then he had given him a stack of blank parchment. Enraptured, the saru had only bothered him when he had a particularly ridiculous looking thing he wanted him to look at.

The silence was broken by a female shout. Shouting...Goku's name? Konzen looked up and saw two people in his doorway, one dressed in a kimono as pink as the cherry blossoms with a red obi and white string, the other in a yellow haori and blue hakama.

"Riko-chan! Kaede-chan!" Goku beamed as he scrambled up from his position on the floor. "What are you guys doing here? Is it something important?" He looked over at Riko who tilted her head towards his voice. "Oh." He turned around. "Konzen, this is Riko-chan and Kaede-chan. I was playing with them yesterday."

"Ah...I know." Konzen placed his writing pen down and stood up.

Kaede ran forward and she hugged Goku, laughing, "No, silly! We're here to see you!"

Konzen watched her with a tilted head before he went over to Riko, making his steps deliberate so she knew where he was, "Welcome. I was not expecting company. Tenpou is usually the one who comes by unannounced."

"I'm sorry for the intrusion." Riko said, tilting her head towards Konzen's direction. "I wasn't even aware that this room had people in it. Kaede sometimes tells me, but...I think she was distracted since she saw Goku." She shook her head from side to side. "Kaede was telling me that she was bored and Goku was the first person I thought of. I hope we're not causing you trouble."

"No trouble. I'm glad to see you." Goku beamed at the two of them before dragging Kaede over to  his drawings. "Look at what I've been working on. Isn't it cool?"

"Oh! Art! I do art sometimes! Let me show you!" Kaede curled up in the circle Goku had created himself, surrounded by the paper and doodles. She took a blank sheet and one of the markers, setting to work while he watched her intently.

"Looks like I'm going to have to get more paper..." Konzen mumbled and looked at Riko, "Let's leave them to it, then. I need to stretch my legs anyway. I didn't realize how long I was sitting in that chair." He was a bit hesitant, but he barely brushed her arm so he could move passed her and then turned her the right direction to follow him. "I am sure you are used to Kaede's ki by now to follow with ease, but you don't know mine."

Riko blinked in surprise and she smiled, "You're the first person to figure it out. About the ki and how I'm able to follow without too much problem." She walked with him, using her bo to help her out. She didn't have to use it if she didn't want to, but as this was an unfamiliar area, learning how the sounds worked here was a good idea so she wouldn't crash into anything. "You're a quick study."

"Goku mentioned you and I spent a little time relearning what your status and role was. I'm also not as unobservant as people think I am." Konzen grumbled, "You aren't the only blind person in Heaven, obviously. I know a bit about how they need to hear the ricochet of sound off of objects. Like...the bats? Of the Lower World. Echo Location? Tenpou talked my ear off about it at some point. I was only half paying attention. Besides, this is a new area for you. Out of your normal route."

Riko was a little surprised and she shook her head fondly. "No. I don't think you're unobservant at all. Though that's a handy assumption people make about you. I'd suggest keeping that card, but...I think that's how trouble starts so maybe you shouldn't take my advice. Though I'm surprised you took time out of your work to learn a little more about my status and role. That's both flattering and embarrassing."

"Before Goku I knew things but didn't give them much thought because they didn't matter." Konzen hummed, turning a corner and guided her down the same way, "So, I knew about you, but I didn't care enough to remember the details. There was no need if we weren't going to cross paths. Now your assistant has taken an interest in Goku, and here we are."

"Daughter almost." Riko said mildly. "Kind of like the relationship you have with Goku, only with less scandal." She shook her head. "Well, I feel a little bad, I don't know anything about you or your status. Just your name that you're related to the Goddess of Mercy....which...from what I understand from Mai, a shock."

"So, then, you aren't going to threaten to separate them, if anything happens?" Konzen glanced sideways at her, ignoring the comment about his Aunt. "You know what Goku is. There isn't a single person in Heaven who doesn't at this point. I still worry about Nataku being forced to abandon Goku."

"I know what Goku is. I know what Nataku is. I also know about the whispers about Li is too and his plans. Though rumor doesn't hold water, I'm weary of it as well. I don't think Nataku will abandon Goku on his own choice. He'll be forced. All I can hope for is that Nataku figures out that he has his own life to live and that he doesn't have to be someone's puppet." Riko's tongue clicked and she let out a frustrated breath. "Besides, separating those three? I'm sure we'll have more luck bringing the moon closer to us now."

"We have the unpopular opinion, then." Konzen huffed, finally turning into a room and made sure she followed him by the creak of the door before he went to shuffle through the drawers, "That boy's smile is already bright, but he was nearly blinding when Kaede hugged him. He wouldn't be the only one upset if you told him he couldn't be in her company."

"Kaede walks with more happiness now that's true. She sounds just as happy as he does when he approached me. He was quite concerned on how I was going to get around. He's a sweetheart." Riko listened to him shuffle around for the papers. "I'm used to having the unpopular opinion. I'm just glad I share it with someone who agrees. That hardly ever happens."

Konzen could agree to that, too. "I wouldn't mind if she stayed for the rest of the day. The more people to entertain him, the better. Would you leave, or would you stay? I can make some tea."

"I could stay. Tea sounds lovely thank you." Riko blinked in surprise. "Just don't let me be too much of a bother and we'll call it good."

PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptyFri Apr 07, 2017 10:27 pm

"Kenren, I have some news for you." Tenpou called up into the tree his General was sitting in, "Do you have any sake left?"

Kenren blinked at surprise as he looked down at Tenpou who was calling up to him. "What you want some?" He asked as he jumped down from the tree and straightened. "That's new for you Ten. Though. You got a new look in your eye. Usually I see that when you're making battle plans. What's going on?"

"Calm down, nothing drastic. I'm in a happy mood, yes. I would like a drink to make it last, is all." Tenpou waved his hand, smiling and chuckling. "Do you remember Mai-chan? The girl I met in the palace library a few months ago?"

"The sweetheart." Kenren remmebered as he fished out a second sake dish and handed it to Tenpou before he poured him some and then sat down underneath the tree. "The one you keep sending books back and forth too, probably locking away love letters in them. What about her? Did you finally make a move after /forever/?"

"Not everyone jumps into bed after meeting someone, Kenren." Tenpou chided but it held more amusement than anything, "Two months is not /forever/ to us romantics. I was taking it slow, getting to know her through the books she liked to read and what she'd offer me. However, to answer your question, yes I did. Just today, actually."

"Fucking finally!" Kenren cheered. "I thought you were going to die pining away. I had a plan on how to get you guys all together too if you were going to spend another month on her." He held his dish out and took a sip. "You deserve that cup now that I know. Well at least we have you down. You ever think Konzen might get a woman? Probably not, the guy's too impossible."

"Maybe not so much. His little friend has been warming him up." Tenpou laughed and looked up through the leaves of the cherry tree taking a sip of his drink, "It seems his charge has found a friend of his own. That was the news I wanted to share. Mai's friend, Riko? Her adopted daughter Kaede is playing with Goku. I suggested Mai get Riko to meet Konzen and take Kaede just to make Goku happy. I can't wait until you meet him, Kenren."

"Mai has Riko as a friend?" Kenren whistled. "You hit the jackpot with that. Keep her as your ally, people tend to forget when she's around and tell her things that they're not supposed to talk about. You could probably get a heads up on a lot of situations. I bet I'll run into him sometime soon, especially if he goes around the palace a lot."

"He does. He'll probably be being chased by some servants trying to contain him so protect him, would you?" Tenpou shook his head and took another drink, "He's sixteen, but still just a child. A lot of things escape him, being born from a rock and not learning social norms."

"And yet we're keeping him up here." Kenren shook his head. "Ah, well...I'll do what I can Ten. It's all I can give ya. But where are you taking Mai? Are you going to try to bring her back to your place? You better clean that library if you don't want to die while trying to get it on you know."

Tenpou elbowed him, but not enough to spill either of their sake, "I'm taking her to the grill for dinner at the end of the week, if you must know. I don't think I'll take her to my place, that's too soon. A good dinner and a good talk to start with will be fine. See what else she's interested in. I'll ask about Riko and Kaede, too, since you're right and having that option open for an information standpoint would be a good idea."

"Well." Kenren blinked in surprise at the grill and he shook his head. "At least you know how to wine and dine. I was getting nervous." He winked at him. "I told you I had good ideas from time to time. Mai sounds real good for you, too. I wish you all the luck, Ten. You most of all deserve it."

Tenpou humphed a little bit, but his smile around his cup was affectionate, "If I'm getting the girl and Konzen might be, as well as Goku, what about you? Think you'll ever find a woman to be serious with?"

"I don't know." Kenren said leaning back. "I don't think so. It's not like I don't like women, I do. I think they're pretty and charming. But I can't imagine the hassle of keeping one happy."

"Maybe you can take a few cues from the rest of us, then. It's not as difficult as you might think." Tenpou hummed, but he dropped it quickly, knowing it made Kenren uncomfortable, "When was the next time you were planning on going to the bar for a game and drinking party?"

"I don't know. Whenever I feel like it. Maybe tonight, maybe a few days from now." Kenren shrugged. "Why? You want to wipe the floor with us at poker again?"

"Haha, that takes all the fun out of it for you. I get more entertainment out of having drinking contests with people who think they can take me on. You know that." Tenpou grinned at him, "I was just curious. Speaking about women made me notice you probably need someone to warm your bed. You get a little grumpy when you haven't had any fun."

Kenren stuck his tongue out at his friend, "Well now that you have a girlfriend I can live my love life vicariously through you."

"I see how it is." Tenpou stuck his nose up in retaliation, though he kept grinning. It was always so easy and relaxing with Kenren. Ah, what would it be like, to see him in love, though? Curious pondering for another night.

PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptySat Apr 08, 2017 12:16 am

Kenren shuffled a deck of cards while he watched the patrons who were already at the table. He had already played a few hands with some, and won enough. He knew that the night was already at the peak, and that the last few rounds would tell if he would win big or go home with a bit of a loss. “Come on, a few more games won’t hurt now will it?”

“You always say that and then it’s our money that goes out the window.” The patron sighed, but they all agreed to stay for at least /one/ more round until Kenren could wheedle out another.

“I’m sure you’ll win.” The woman that was on his left said, her perfume was strong and she was pretty and big busted. Someone Kenren wouldn’t mind taking home for the night. He probably would if the night treated him well. He wasn’t paying attention as the woman took a jug from the waitress that walked by and poured it into the sake cup. Her long kimono sleeves slipped up just a bit, just showing the barest hint of her skin and wrist, and she moved closer, leaning in as she poured and then pulled away.

Kenren couldn’t help but to let his eyes wander to her breasts. The kimono might be modest, but the way she was wearing it wasn’t too conservative. Hm. Could he see her sprawled out in his bed? It was a possibility but he wondered how much of one.

"Ah, taking our money /and/ getting a lady, eh, Kenren?" another patron who tended to play most of Kenren's games teased him, "You're going all out tonight, aren't you?"

"I might as well." Kenren shrugged as he reached and took a sip of the sake. "Now then." He passed out the cards and he was just about to pick up his when he noticed something was...off. His vision was doubling. He didn't have /that/ much to drink, did he? No...no something was off.

"Kenren? You okay, man?" the patron's brows furrowed, "You look a little funny."

"He always looks funny, that's just his face!" another shouted his joke, then he was next to give him a look as Kenren didn't immediately tell him to fuck off.

Kenren said nothing as he stood up, but in doing so he nearly stumbled backwards and down. The woman let out a gasp and he knew some of the patrons that had been joking with him earlier were a bit shocked. One sip of sake /shouldn't/ do this. "Sorry fellas. I think I should leave." He wasn't even certain if his voice was working properly.

"Nani? So soon, Kenren?! The night was just getting good!" one of them whined.

"Yeah I know," Kenren waved. "But someone managed to drug my drink so I might as well get." He gave a look at the woman who had been flirting with him before he decided that he should just leave before he got nasty.

"Whoa, man, wait, what?!" the other gaped at him, the woman's jaw dropped and she looked at the sake in horror, "The hell?! Ken let us-shit!" He had gotten up and was going to help Kenren when Ken /did/ stumble over his own two feet. He was just about to land on his face when someone unexpected caught him under the arm and braced his weight.

"Dumping that sake would be a good idea, but it wasn't the woman. It was the little shit over at the bar." The woman pointed over at the exact one, "The waitress got distracted and she tampered with the bottle."

The waitress that had been spoken blinked in horror now that everyone's eyes were on her. "I-I didn't I mean...."

"Pay more attention next time!" the patron snapped and the bouncer of the bar sauntered over to the woman who had been accused, her face ghostly white at being caught.

"You can let go of me now, thanks." Kenren said as he roughly got out of the person's arms and started to walk again only to stumble. He cursed as he was helped out by the stranger with the voice as they walked out. The night's fresh air helped only slightly. At least now he didn't feel like he was going to die from too many lights and sounds. "No. Seriously. You can let me go now. I'd like to leave."

"At least let me take you home, good grief!" she snorted, "You've nearly fallen twice now! Would you rather be embarrassed by a complete stranger you'll never see again or your drinking buddies?"

Kenren tried to focus his eyes, but they were still so blurry and he could barely make her out. He didn't like the sensation of not knowing if he could fall over in a seizure, or if he could do something to cause her harm. "Fine." He said with gritted teeth, mostly at himself than at her. "To my house and no further."

"Just tell me where to go." She said, her voice softer, trying to sooth him instead of stress him out further. "The adrenaline is making you panic. Try and calm down while we walk."

"Yeah yeah. This way." Kenren pointed and together they walked. While they walked in silence he was trying to place as many puzzle pieces as he could. Obviously he was walking with a stubborn ass woman who had a faint scent that was...that was...he couldn't even begin to try to describe it much like he couldn't describe her voice. This wasn't too embarrassing as it was a lack of guard. He didn't want to be vulnerable to a stranger especially to someone like her. Who he doubted he'd remember later on. By the time they got to his door the strength he had that made him get here left and he came crashing to his knees. "God..."

"Hmm, you praying to yourself?" she teased, even as she still had a hold on him, "If I let you go now you'll pass out inside your door. Let me get you to a couch or something."

"I thought I told you to the door and that's it. I can do the rest my self. Let me go." Kenren tried to shake her off, but he was weaker than he knew.

"Oi, oi, I just want to make sure you'll be okay, you big idiot. I swear I'll leave." She tried to tell him, but the new surge of anger made him toss her and she landed on her ass in the dirt. "Hey! No, don't get...up..."

~*~

Tenpou was surprised to hear the knock on his office door. So late at night...it couldn't be Kenren, though? He was out drinking. Had said as much earlier that day. Did he...get bored? But then why would he knock? Getting from his chair, Tenpou waded through the scores of books and reached the door. He blinked in shock at someone he didn't recognize, short brown-black hair framing a fierce but pretty face, pale blue eyes piercing into him with determination. "I'm sorry? Who are you?" he asked, dumbfounded.

"Never mind me. Are you Marshal Tenpou?" she straightened in respect, obviously knowing who she was in front of.

"I...am?" Tenpou's brows furrowed.

"Your General's sake was drugged. He's at home, but he's not safe in his current condition. I had to ask around for someone I could come get to help him."

Tenpou felt himself go cold and he was sure he paled. "Arigato, I'll go take care of him right away." He nodded to her and she seemed satisfied by that, turning on her heal and walking off. He didn't waste any time, throwing on some shoes before he headed from his office and to Kenren's home.

~*~

"Kenren! Kenren! Kenren, wake up!"

Kenren heard a voice, and it oddly sounded like Tenpou. Shit. Was he sleeping in a tree again? He slowly opened his eyes and....oh hell that was a horrible throbbing headache that he was introduced to. Never mind the fact that his body felt like he had been thrown around by demonic creatures and he was pretty sure they weren't in a war right now. He didn't feel wounded, but...he blinked and..."Ten? What are you doing in my house?" He was laying on a couch...weird. Why wasn't he in a bed and...why was Tenpou looking like he was five seconds away from worrying himself to death to murdering a bitch?

"Thank goodness...How are you feeling? Your door's unlocked. Someone told me you were drugged, and I came right here. Do you need anything? I can get you water." Tenpou was relieved he opened his eyes.

"Water sounds amazing right now, but....what? My door?" Kenren tried to recall what happened. "...Was it a woman that wouldn't stop talking?"

"If you really were drugged, you /might/ have that backwards?" Tenpou's smile was small, but it was there. He patted Kenren's chest and stood up, hurrying to the kitchen to get a glass of water for his friend. He came back as Kenren was looking at his fully clothed body in confusion, "What was the last thing you remember before you blacked out? Or was that it?"

"I just remember taking a sip of sake and then having the world go crazy." Kenren admitted after a moment. "And a stubborn woman that wouldn't leave me alone though...I remember telling her to leave...so she kept that promise at least. But that's all I know."

"Hai, it was a woman who came to get me." Tenpou told him, keeping his voice low so not to agitate any headache Kenren might have, handing him the water, "She looked pretty determined and feisty. Had to be to get you all the way to your couch from the bar, I'm sure. She didn't give me a name, before you ask."

"Darn. Oh well." Kenren took a sip of water and shook his head. "Jeez. Who'd even drug a guy these days?"

"Hmm...maybe someone too shy to get in your face to be taken to bed by you. It's only ever the really bold ones you manage to snatch up." Tenpou drawled watching him closely, "I'm glad you're okay. She said you were drugged and I nearly had a heart attack. Wouldn't that have been exciting?"

"Well, I think Mai would be devastated and then I'd have to answer to her and I don't know if I want to go up against a woman that caught your fancy." Kenren drawled. "She sounds half as terrifying as you are."

"You might be right. Though, I admit I really want a cigarette now after this whole mess. I'll stay here with you tonight, finish my report in the morning." Tenpou sighed, "Now don't give me that look. I know you'll say you're fine but we don't know what after effects this drug will have."

"Alright." Kenren coincided and closed his eyes. "I know better than to fight you when you're the one being stubborn Ten."

What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU Empty
PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptySat Apr 08, 2017 1:07 am

Ah, after getting Tenpou to help Kenren, the night had become quite boring again. It wasn't too dark, but the moon wasn't high or very full either. She sighed as she looked up. The stars were twinkling at her, such brilliant points in the sky. Did distance betray how far apart each star was from another? From where it looked like to her, they all had many friends. "Pah, what am I getting all upset for? I chose this life. I shouldn't mope. Pass by and move on." She mumbled to herself and turned a corner, but nearly crashed into someone due to poor timing rather than not paying attention, "Gomen!" she gasped, reaching out to steady the person, hoping fleetingly they wouldn't get angry.

The woman let out a startled laugh, "It's alright. I'm fine." She kept herself steady and leaned against her bo. "Troubling thoughts this evening? I heard you talk but....I'm not sensing another person with you. My name is Riko. I'm sorry for running into you."

Blind...? She stared at her, taking her in for a moment. "Talking to myself...years alone, with no one else to talk to, it sort of becomes common. I try not to do it when I'm around others, though. I get enough dirty looks as it is for my way of life."

"I did hear you mention something about the stars having many friends. It was a poetic way to talk about your loneliness." Riko said lightly as she tilted her head up towards the sky. "It sounds like to me you want to be like the stars and be surrounded by friends. The way your living now makes you sound miserable."

"From time to time I get like this. I usually get over it by spending time in Heaven and being reminded why I became a wanderer." She snorted, "Do you...need help getting home? I'm sure I disturbed your route."

Riko thought about it and then she held her hand. "I would enjoy that. Tell me a little more about your wandering. I haven't been to the surface, is that where your from?"

She stayed as close as she could without hindering her walking, letting her tell her which streets to take as the blind woman got the sense of where she was back. "Mm...born here, raised in a different section of Heaven. People commonly believe that the 'no killing' law applies everywhere, but because my home district doesn't follow that rule I was able to become a Mercenary. I try and follow the rules as I travel between worlds and districts, but the figurative blood on my hands is enough for people to dislike me. You can't exactly tell at first glance, since you're blind, but usually when people see how harsh my eyes are they balk. I hope that doesn't offend you, being blunt like that. Merely trying to explain."

"I tell that you're a fighter. You're wearing a sword, I can hear it on your waist. You also walk with the same gait our military walk, but with less precision. You have a bit of weight and fast reflexes, otherwise I would've fallen to the ground." Riko commented as she listened to her companion. "But you're not wrong about how people tend to view others. Laws that exist here, must exist everywhere. But only fools listen to that. If your eyes are a reason to hate you then my eyes must be a reason to be feared. After all, at least you have emotion in yours. I have nothing in mine."

"You may not have emotion in your eyes, but you use your face instead." She murmured, "I'm Ran. I'm sorry. I don't tend to introduce myself to people I'll never see again, but I feel like if I don't tell you I'll be being extremely rude."

"Am I dying?" Riko asked after a moment in surprise. "Are you dying?"

"Wh-What kind of question is that?!" Ran balked.

Riko gently reached up and felt where she believed Ran's cheek was before she pulled on it. "If you have the nerve to ask me that question then you must not be dying and I certainly am not bleeding on the ground. Therefore that "never" is void." She let Ran's cheek go. "Jeez. I get that you're a lonely soul, but this is too much. Alright. I think I made my decision. You're staying the night so I don't find you half-dead in a river or something."

"WHAT?! I just told you I'm a Wanderer and a Mercenary! That's why I said never! I move from place to place!" Ran waved her arms, "Why are you suddenly making me stay at your house?! You don't know me! I can find an Inn. I've done my good deed of the day twice over now, I'll be fine!"

Riko was highly amused as she felt Ran move her arms since the air was hitting her face as she fanned it. "You're right. I don't know you. I don't know what you're capable of." She agreed after a moment. "And sure you'll be fine. You'll find an inn, you'll be a-okay." She poked Ran's chest, not really knowing where exactly she was touching, but she knew the jab hurt a bit. "But that's a lie."

"I..." Ran choked a bit, "It...wasn't?" she was confused. She had believed her own words and couldn't figure out where the lie was. "What? I don't understand you."

Riko shrugged, "You spoke about the stars having friends and then convinced yourself that it was a life you chose, therefore you can't complain." She reminded. "That's enough for me to know that you being fine is a lie. So, stay with me as a guard. If you feel like you have to justify staying at all."

Ran could only stare, and when Riko reached to take her hand again and finish leading the way back to her house, she didn't resist. She was just so dumbstruck. "You're weird..." she said, if only just to say something.

"Mai said that too." Riko commented lightly. "Kaede said that as well when I found her first. But, well. Someone should be answering to those "two good deeds" you did tonight. Might as well be me."

What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU Empty
PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptySat Apr 08, 2017 2:40 am

After getting home that morning from her sleepover with Goku, Kaede had been shocked to to see Riko had her own sleepover. Ran had been kind to her, even if a bit uncertain, and it had been funny when Ran asked if she could go yet and Riko told her no outright. It was always so great when Riko was sassy. Ran had then said 'what am I your prisoner now?' to which Riko just grinned at her and said she was going to be granting her wish and making her friends.

It confused Kaede, but watching Ran train in their backyard garden was entertaining, and Ran didn't leave even as lunch came around. Ran cooked and it was pretty tasty. It was around this time Kaede made her way to Riko's room, knocking before entering and she flopped on her mother's bed, "Why are you having Ran stay here? What happened?"

"Hm? Nothing really happened." Riko said as she stood up from her seat and sat down next to Kaede. "She just needs someone to look after her for a little while is all. She's a good person, she just has a sticky personality is all."

Kaede giggled at that, "You said you were gunna make her friends. So you going to invite Mai-chan over?" she asked curiously, "Or just take us over to see Mai?"

"Hm. I wonder. If we go see Mai, we may run into Tenpou." Riko said as she pondered about this. "If we run into Tenpou, we get one person knocked out of the way since I haven't met him yet and Ran needs to build more connections. But maybe I should make it slow. Maybe just Mai for the day."

"Whatever happens is fate, right? So we could go see Mai. If Tenpou's there, then he's there." Kaede nodded firmly. "My sleepover with Goku was nice yesterday, though on my way home I overheard that Nataku was being sent out to fight again. Some stupid demon named Gyumau."

Riko's eyebrows furrowed, but she said nothing. Ran thought that she was dangerous and people looked badly at her for killing. She wondered what Ran would think if she ever met the "Killing Puppet" of their district. Her job wasn't to make Ran feel bad however. She stood up, "Let's go see Mai." She said after a moment. "Or in my case hear her."

"Now?" Kaede rolled off the bed she had just started to get comfortable on. "Okay. I'll go tell Ran we're leaving." Honestly she would be glad for the distraction as well. She was just so worried about Nataku and they'd only gotten to hang out once.

~*~

When they got to Mai's place, she was fussing over what to wear and after letting them in, Kaede saw the several dresses she had on the couch, "Can't decide what to wear?" she looked up at Mai blinking.

"Why you dressing up? Got a hot date?" Ran asked as she slowly joined the other two inside Mai's home, "Hello. Riko made me her friend. I'm Ran." It felt odd to have given her name to three people within a twenty-four hour span.

Mai looked over and blinked when she saw Ran. She looked at Riko who had walked into her room with confidence and currently feeling the fabric of the dresses that were on the couch. She looked back at Ran, who looked nervous. "She got you too huh?" She asked with a small smile. "I'm Mai. It's a pleasure to meet you." She bowed to Ran and then looked at the dresses. "Yes. I do. It's with the Marshal of the Western Army and I have /no/ idea how to dress. I don't want to be super casual, so all of my sundresses are out." She gestured to her closet. "Same with kimonos because I'm not looking to go extra fancy on the poor guy."

"Why not wear a dress that's semi-casual?" Riko asked as she let go of the fabric and felt her way over closer to where Mai was standing. "I know you have plenty of those."

"And that is why I'm looking at this pile right here." Mai gestured to the pile on the couch that was right in front of her. "I keep pairing them with shoes, and trying to get a feel for what he'd like. But every dress feels wrong. So I need help."

PostSubject: Re: What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU    What Does Heaven Look Like To You-Saiyuki Gaiden AU EmptySat Apr 08, 2017 4:02 pm

Ran tensed at the mention of the Marshal, but didn't want to ask his name and give them more incentive to have her stay. "Well, why don't you try them on for us, then? Riko can't tell what you're choosing, but Kaede and I can help you decide. If that's not creepy, at least, for a stranger like me to help you pick something for a date."

Mai tilted her head at Ran curiously. "I told you my name, right? So we're not longer strangers. If anything you /not/ knowing me too well is my advantage. It means you could give me a new eye. Riko's no good here."

"I like dress up, too!" Kaede piped in, "We can debate over whether or not we like something!"

Ran smiled just a bit, "That's all true. Alright. Let the fashion show begin."

~

"The cleavage on that is too low for your demeanor. Why do you even /have/ that?" Another dress. "Too tight. You're going to a grill, right? You're going to suffocate." Toss that and a few others. "Ugh, too dark and like you're going to a restaurant. You didn't want too fancy." Moving on.

Finally. "Good color. Brings out your eyes. Shows off those nice legs. You'll be a tease if you lean over but you're not going to pop out of your dress."

Kaede giggled and grinned at Mai, "At least she's honest!"

Mai looked at the dress that finally won Ran's approval. It was a beautiful sky blue dress that had a bit of a low collar, but not too much. She had short sleeves and the skirt had a nice flow when she walked. "So this one?" She asked to make sure as she spun around for the sake of it. She liked how the skirt picked up and fluttered around her. It made her feel beautiful and attractive.

"You're so pretty, Mai-chan!" Kaede clapped.

Ran nodded firmly, "Maybe some white shoes? Got any hair accessories we can pick out? Don't want your long hair getting burned over the grill or eating it. We could do maybe a half ponytail. or partial braid...yeah, how about a partial braid? That'd be sweeter."

Mai grinned, "Only if you know how to do a braid. I can't do it to save my life and Riko's good, but I don't know if she knows what a partial braid looks like."

"Goku and I were talking about flower corwns!" Kaede perked, "I could braid you hair!"

"I was about to offer, but that's good too. Would leave my hands free to raid your accessories." Ran's smile was wider now than when she'd arrived.

Riko felt relieved. Ran was making friends with Mai and if Mai liked her then Ran would have to run /fast/ if she didn't want to be involved anymore and that would be a sight. Mai was faster an would more than likely tackle her before she even made it to the border.

"What's with the smile?" Mai questioned looking over at Riko who was snickering to herself.

"Oh nothing. I had a funny thought go through my mind." Riko said, waving it aside.

"I've already realized she's a sneaky one. Already got me wrapped up in her web." Ran rolled her eyes, "Okay! Get me your jewelry box or whatever."

After a little while, Kaede had Mai sitting in front of her while she sat on the couch for leverage, and now that the fashion show was over, and Ran was being quiet while she looked in Mai's jewelry box, Kaede couldn't be quiet anymore. She'd said something to Riko already, but she finished Mai's braid since her fingers were fast, and then hugged her from behind. "Mai-chan. you said to trust my instincts right?"

"Hm?" Mai blinked and looked over at Kaede. "Yes. I said that. Your instincts never fail you. The only time you fail is if you second guess. Why do you ask all of the sudden?"

"I'm worried about Nataku." Kaede sniffed, "Something doesn't feel right. Something bad is going on and I don't like it. I can't do anything about it, either, until it happens. I want to be prepared, though. Would you...make me a custom first aid kit?"

Mai frowned and she gently reached up and patted Kaede's head. "I can do that." She said gently. "You should be the Goddess of Divine Intuition, Kaede." Riko undoubtedly already knew what was happening...and Mai was hearing it form others as well. Kaede, who only knew that something was going to happen, probably had the most information than they did. "I'll show you how to use it too."

"Are you...talking about the War Prince, Nataku? I travel, and I've heard of him." Ran furrowed her brows.

Kaede stiffened. "That's right. I'm his friend. So is Goku. Goku can't play with him, though."

"Can /you/?" Ran asked slowly.

Kaede went quiet, "I haven't tried. I've played with Goku when he can't to keep him company."

"I don't know about Goku, but it sounds like if he's restricted but you're not, you could see Nataku when you want. I'd suggest taking Mai or Riko with you, so you have an adult and someone of higher status."

Kaede looked at Riko, "Would you...help me do that? If he's hurt, so I don't have to sneak in?"

Riko thought about this seriously. She knew that Li would use this against her. She never shown an interest in Nataku before and if she started caring now, Li would suspect something. However, if Kaede snuck in, it'd be worse. She nodded her head after a moment, "I can get you in." She said softly. "If we run into Goku, we'll get him in there too. He's too honest so we'll make sure any lie we tell is simple and to the point."

"Riko-chan is in her rebellious stage." Mai teased her friend and laughed as a pillow came flying at her. "Seriously though. There would've been a time you'd think this was too dangerous." Especially with what was moving up above.

Riko shrugged, "I think I could do with a bit of recklessness from time to time. I'm not a /complete/ stick in the mud."

"That is true." Mai said solemnly. "If you were, none of us would be friends with you."

It was pretty hard for Tenpou to not stare, though he was openly shocked. The pale blue dress showed her figure pretty well, her legs smooth and long and her cute feet slipped into white shoes. Her hair was mostly down, but pulled out of her face by a braid, a diamond studded hair piece clipping the braid at the top, a blue hairband keeping it together. "Wow, Mai..." he murmured tenderly, "You're lovely tonight. All this just for me? You look like you had help."

"Riko started collecting people again, so I did." Mai laughed a little nervous at the way he was openly staring at her. She could tell that he was pleased with her look and it made her happy. "Her name is Ran. Apparently Riko ran into her the other night muttering to herself. Shall we?"

"The other night?" Tenpou blinked at her, motioning her forward and then placed his hand at the small of her back, guiding her as they were moved to a seat and once they were cosey in a booth he kept gong, "The other night Kenren was drugged. Someone helped him home, disappeared, got me to go help him, and then disappeared again. Short brown hair, blue eyes?"

"Yes!" Mai gasped and leaned forward, her eyes wide in fear, "Kenren was drugged? Was he alright? Do you know if it was a poison type of drug or an aphrodisiac or something of the sort? Was he okay when you left him? I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't be freaking out and you wouldn't have left his side if he wasn't okay, but that's terrifying. My god. Why would someone /do/ that. He never struck me as a kind of guy that would have /that/ kind of enemy."
